After five consecutive years of drop in maternal mortality, this rate in Paraná state has shown a strong increase, interrupting the dropping tendency. With a drop of only 33%, between 1990 and 2004, the state is far from reaching its goal of reducing by ¾ the maternal mortality rate. The number of teenage mothers is also worrying: one out of every five babies has a mother of age 19 or less.
